The VA Aid & Attendance pension benefit can provide significant monthly income to help pay for senior care. Many eligible veterans and spouses don't know this benefit exists.

What Is Aid & Attendance?

Aid & Attendance is an enhanced VA pension for veterans (and surviving spouses) who need help with daily activities or are housebound. It's separate from VA healthcare and disability compensation.

2024 Maximum Monthly Rates

  • Veteran without dependents: $2,229/month
  • Veteran with spouse: $2,642/month
  • Surviving spouse: $1,432/month

These amounts are in addition to any other VA benefits received.

Who Qualifies

Service requirements:

  • 90+ days of active duty
  • At least one day during a wartime period
  • Discharge other than dishonorable

Wartime periods include:

  • WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War (1990-present)
  • Specific date ranges apply

Care requirements (must meet one):

  • Need help with daily activities (bathing, dressing, eating)
  • Bedridden or blind
  • Residing in a nursing home due to disability
  • Require supervision due to mental incapacity

Financial requirements:

  • Limited income and assets
  • Net worth limit: ~$150,538 (2024, adjusted annually)
  • Income offset by unreimbursed medical expenses (including care costs)

What It Can Pay For

Aid & Attendance funds can be used for:

  • Assisted living communities
  • Memory care
  • Adult family homes
  • In-home caregivers
  • Nursing home costs not covered by other benefits

How to Apply

1. Gather documentation:

- DD-214 (discharge papers)

- Medical evidence of care needs

- Financial information

- Marriage/death certificates if applicable

2. Submit application:

- VA Form 21-527EZ (veterans)

- VA Form 21-534EZ (surviving spouses)

- Can apply online, by mail, or through a representative

3. Wait for decision:

- Processing takes 6-12+ months currently

- Benefits are retroactive to application date once approved
